► (1737-1809) Escritor político británico. Alentó la causa de la independencia estadounidense y defendió la Revolución francesa en su obra Los derechos del hombre. Fue miembro de la convención. Autor de La edad de la razón.

Escritor angloestadounidense y autor de panfletos políticos. Luego de diversos fracasos profesionales en Inglaterra, conoció a Benjamin Franklin, quien le aconsejó inmigrar a América del Norte. Llegó a Filadelfia en 1774 y colaboró en la dirección de la revista Pennsylvania Magazine. En enero de 1776 escribió Common Sense [Sentido común], panfleto de 50 páginas en que abogaba elocuentemente por la independencia; en poco tiempo se vendieron más de 500.000 ejemplares que fortalecieron en gran medida la resolución de los colonos. Mientras fue ayudante del gral. Nathanael Greene durante la guerra de independencia de los Estados Unidos de América, escribió los 16 artículos titulados Crisis (1776–83), cada uno firmado "Sentido común; el primero de ellos, que comienza así: "Estos son los tiempos que ponen a prueba el alma de los hombres, se leyó, por orden de George Washington, a las tropas reunidas en Valley Forge. En 1787, viajó a Inglaterra y se vio envuelto en debates acerca de la Revolución francesa; su obra The Rights of Man [Los derechos del hombre] (1791–92) defendía la revolución y propugnaba el republicanismo. Visto como un ataque a la monarquía, fue prohibido y, Paine fue declarado fuera de la ley en Inglaterra. Pasó entonces a Francia, donde fue elegido miembro de la Convención Nacional (1792–93). Cuando criticó el reinado del Terror, Maximilien Robespierre lo encarceló (1793–94). Su obra The Age of Reason [La edad de la razón] (1794, 1796), cuya primera parte se publicó mientras su autor estaba todavía preso, le ganó fama de ateo, aunque en realidad defiende el deísmo. En 1802 volvió a EE.UU.; criticado por sus escritos deístas y mal recordado por sus servicios durante la guerra de independencia, murió en la pobreza.
